President William Ruto has openly dismissed former Chief Justice David Maraga's intentions to run for president in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a press conference today, President Ruto questioned Maraga's belief in the country and its people.
"We have a great nation, and we have a duty and responsibility to make it greater. I listened to one gentleman who just retired the other day and wants to be President," Ruto stated.
"Do You Believe in Kenya?"
The President went on to directly challenge Maraga's rationale for seeking the nation's top office.
"You want to be a president of a failed state? You want us to entrust you with the leadership of a country you don’t believe in? To people you don’t believe in?" President Ruto questioned.
He also addressed critics of his own leadership: "I listen to Kenyans who say, 'Ruto must go.' What are your reasons for saying Ruto must go? I'm sure it's not because of the spelling of his name."
Maraga's Campaign Gains Momentum
He revealed that his campaign has quickly amassed over 500,000 Kenyan shillings within just two days of launching his campaign website, Davidaga.com.
Speaking on K24 TV, Maraga expressed immense confidence in his bid, stating, "very confident, very confident, people are tired, people just want change".

David Maraga recently announced his intentions to run for presidency in 2027 general elections.
The financial contributions received from Kenyans, both locally and in the diaspora, are seen by Maraga as a strong indicator of the public's desire for change.
"I mean, within two days in Kenya, we had more than 500,000 shillings, and some of those in the diaspora are putting in dollars. That tells you that the Kenyans want change," he asserted.
Concerns Over Governance and "Captured" Parliament
Maraga's primary motivation for seeking the presidency stems from a deep concern over the current state of governance and the electoral system.
He laments that the president is weaponizing the judicial system against Kenyans.
Maraga believes that Parliament, which is constitutionally mandated to take action, including impeachment, when the president violates the constitution, has been "captured" by the president and is therefore failing in its duties.
"The president is terrorizing his people; he’s weaponizing the justice system against his people. Parliament is supposed to take action when the president is violating the constitution, but it is captured, so it cannot. Since parliament is not doing it, I’ve come up and I have support to remove him in 2027,” Maraga said.
