Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP), Babu Owino, has made a bold declaration that he believes he is not just suitable, but also overqualified to become Kenya's next President.
This assertion comes at a time when several other opposition leaders are also expressing their interest in the top job for the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
Eyeing State House: A Proven Track Record?
Speaking recently during the "Breakfast 47" talk show on Radio 47, the outspoken MP unveiled his future presidential ambitions. He's backing these claims with what he describes as a "proven track record of development" during his time as an MP.
"I’m overqualified to be Kenya’s President. I have the passion, energy, and political acumen. My followers are urging me to prove to the world that I can be the President," Babu stated.
Governor First, President Next?
Despite his presidential aspirations, Babu Owino also hinted at a potential run for the Nairobi County Governor seat in 2027. A formal presidential announcement is expected by December 2025, or at the latest, January 2026.
"In 2027, Nairobians know Babu is the incoming Governor. I’ll declare my bid by January 2026. For now, I’m focused on the work," he clarified.
Taking Aim at Nairobi's Leadership
Babu Owino didn't shy away from criticising the current Nairobi Governor, Johnson Sakaja. He pointed out the city's struggles under Sakaja's leadership, specifically mentioning issues like poor drainage and waste management.
"There’s a problem in Nairobi, garbage is everywhere. Everything the governor touches turns into trash. If it rains for thirty minutes in Nairobi, everywhere will flood. It's like there will be a Lake Nairobi," he quipped.
He also urged other youthful leaders to be fair in their political activities. He specifically referenced Governor Sakaja's 'Dishi na County Initiative', arguing that it unfairly excludes children from private schools who also face hunger.
