In a heartbreaking development, Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, a young mask vendor reportedly shot in the head at close range during Nairobi protests on June 17th, has been officially declared brain dead.

His family announced the devastating news, revealing Kariuki has been on life support at Kenyatta National Hospital for weeks, following an incident that sparked national outrage.

Speaking with the media, Emily Wanjira, the family spokesperson delivered the update, stating they received a midnight call from the hospital around 12:47 AM, confirming Boniface's brain-dead status.

“The reality of the things happening is that Boniface Mwangi Kariuki is confirmed to be brain dead. So that's where and how far we are,she said.

She explained his brainstem is no longer working; his brain is "fully dead," though his heart still beats.

Crucially, legally in Kenya, switching off life support is not permitted. Thus, Boniface remains connected, with the family told to "wait for the fate".

The medical ordeal has inflicted a severe financial burden. The hospital bill has climbed significantly, now at "3 point something" million.

Despite the dire situation, the family confirms that they have received no communication or assistance from the government regarding the bill.

"None has come through,"Wanra lamented, referencing previous hopes and promises.

The emotional toll on the family is immense. Wanjira admitted the news of Boniface's brain death triggered the family, making it difficult to face the public as this story was all over the country.

Boniface's tragic shooting by police officers during #JusticeForAlbertOjwang protests in Nairobi sparked significant public outcry, intensifying calls for police accountability and justice for victims of excessive force.

Police officers allegedly involved in the shooting have since been arrested and arraigned in connection with the incident.

The public has been vocal about seeking justice for Boniface, drawing attention to broader issues of police conduct during demonstrations.
