Police have confirmed the arrest of a man who was seen on camera hurling a machete at anti-riot officers during violent demonstrations in London Estate, Nakuru.
Hassan Mtimkavu, also known as Paul Ositi, is a Ugandan national, according to authorities, and was spotted boldly brandishing the weapon at police officers during Monday's protests.
According to Stephen Kirui, the sub-county police commander for Nakuru Town West, Mtimkavu was apprehended after being flushed out of a hiding place on Tuesday.
Officers reportedly rushed him to the Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital after he pretended to be ill soon after his arrest.
"He is in the level four hospital under police supervision after pretending to be ill when he was arrested," he stated.
Kirui said the suspect would be charged with several offenses, such as illegally entering Kenya, robbery, theft, incitement, and breaking and entering. Mtimkavu was among a group of rioters who were protesting the recent death of Daniel Nderitu, a London Estate local.
A police operation targeting a suspected drug dealer resulted in the fatal shooting, which sparked protests and outrage in Nakuru.
Authorities say that during the pursuit, residents confronted officers, resulting in a confrontation where the 35-year-old man was shot and killed.
Investigators are still searching for additional suspects in the violent disturbances. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen cautioned the public on Friday not to provoke police officers during protests.
Murkomen's warning referred to the Nakuru incident. "We will not compromise, regardless of what others may say. Keeping people safe is our responsibility in the security sector, and we pledge this to the Kenyan people," Murkomen stated.
"We will hold civilians who are abusing their civilian authority accountable, just as we hold the police accountable."
In response to public outcry, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
