A day after Senior Counsel Martha Karua was forcibly returned to Kenya after landing in Tanzania, activist Boniface Mwangi has alleged harassment by individuals he believes are Tanzanian law enforcement officers.

Taking to his X page, Mwangi disclosed that while in Dar es Salaam, a group of unidentified men, whom he suspects to be police officers, surrounded his hotel room at Serena Hotel.

According to Mwangi, the men refused to identify themselves, prompting him to remain inside his room and refuse to open the door.

“My life is in danger. I'm at Serena Hotel, Dar es Salaam, and there are armed men in civilian clothes outside my room. They claim they are police officers, but they have refused to identify themselves. They will have to break the door to remove me here. I'm not going to open it,” Mwangi posted.

The activist later updated his followers, stating that the men were still outside his room and that he would only open the door once his lawyers arrived.

Mwangi did not clarify whether his visit to Tanzania was related to the ongoing treason case against opposition leader Tundu Lissu, but he appeared to align himself with other Kenyan activists who have reportedly faced similar treatment in the country.

Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, along with activists Hanifa Farsafi and Hussein Khalid, also claimed they were detained at Julius Nyerere Airport and had their passports confiscated.

Tundu Lissu, the CHADEMA opposition leader, was arrested two months ago after calling for electoral commission reforms ahead of Tanzania’s general election in October. He is expected to appear in court on treason charges.

Martha Karua was deported from Julius Nyerere Airport on Sunday, having planned to attend Lissu’s court hearing.

Meanwhile, retired Chief Justice David Maraga has confirmed his safe arrival in Tanzania and is reportedly heading to the court to follow the case.
