Kenya Airways (KQ) has strongly criticised former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko over an April Fools’ Day post he shared on social media on 1 April 2025.

The well-known politician and businessman claimed on his X (formerly Twitter) account that a Kenya Airways aircraft had been involved in an accident.

"A KQ plane has crashed," Sonko wrote in a brief post.

The message quickly gained attention, with many social media users seeking further details about the alleged incident.

However, some soon recognised it as an April Fools’ joke, which Kenya Airways later confirmed.

In response, the airline firmly condemned the spread of false information, stressing the importance of aviation safety.

"This is not a laughing matter! Spreading false information about aviation safety is highly irresponsible," Kenya Airways responded in a post directed at Sonko.

The airline also urged him to delete the tweet.

Sonko was among several public figures who used 1 April as an opportunity to mislead their followers with pranks. While some quickly identified the jokes, many were momentarily misled.

Avril Nyambura’s Pregnancy Prank Sparks Debate

Meanwhile, Kenyan singer and actress Avril Nyambura also caused a stir with her April Fools’ prank. Taking to her social media accounts, Avril shared what appeared to be a pregnancy announcement, accompanied by a photo of herself cradling a baby bump.

Fans and followers flooded her comments section with congratulatory messages, with some speculating about the identity of the father.

However, hours later, Avril clarified that it was all in good humour, revealing that the post was simply an April Fools’ joke.

While some fans laughed it off, others criticised the prank, arguing that pregnancy is a sensitive topic and not something to joke about.

Despite the mixed reactions, Avril stood by her joke, playfully engaging with her audience and reminding them that April Fools’ Day is all about harmless fun.
