Preparations for the Embu Sevens are gathering pace with tournament director Wilkister Miranga confident the venue is ready to host teams and fans for the penultimate leg of the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit this weekend.
The two-day tournament, scheduled for September 5-6 at Embu Stadium, comes at a crucial stage of the circuit with teams battling for valuable points ahead of the season-ending Christie Sevens.
Miranga said the organising team had made good progress and was looking forward to delivering a successful tournament in Embu.
“Preparations for Embu Sevens are progressing well, and we are confident that we are ready to host the teams and fans this weekend. Embu Stadium provides an ideal location for supporters to come together and enjoy the tournament,” said Miranga.
She also welcomed the support from Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL), through its Tusker brand, which has injected Sh1.5 million into the tournament.
“We appreciate KBL and Tusker for coming on board and supporting the event, which will help us deliver a strong experience for both the teams and fans,” she said.
The sponsorship will support tournament logistics and fan activities, including the Tusker Village and the official after-party.
The Embu Sevens is the fifth leg of the 2026 National Sevens Circuit, which has produced a closely fought battle at the top of the Division One standings.
Pool A features KCB Rugby, MSC Rugby, KU Blak Blad, and Kisumu RFC.
Pool B consists of Menengai Oilers, NYS Spades, Kenya Harlequin, and Embu RFC.
Pool C comprises Kabras Sugar, Nondescripts RFC, Nakuru RFC, and Strathmore Leos.
Pool D includes Daystar Falcons, Mwamba RFC, MMUST, and Zetech Oaks.
KCB Rugby lead the standings on 76 points, three ahead of defending circuit champions Kabras Sugar on 73. Menengai Oilers are third on 58 points, while Daystar Falcons and Kenya Harlequin are tied on 52.
Mwamba are sixth on 45 points, with Nondescripts and Strathmore Leos sharing seventh place on 41 points.
KCB and Kabras have each won two of the opening four legs, with Kabras claiming the most recent title at the Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa.
With only Embu and Christie Sevens remaining, the weekend's action could have a major bearing on the final circuit standings.
In Division Two, Stallions Rugby lead on 69 points, followed by Kabarak University and Zetech Oaks on 44 points each. Northern Suburbs are fourth on 42 points.
