Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala has said the party will meet Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Monday for coalition talks ahead of 2027 elections.
Malala said DCP will use the meeting persuade Kalonzo to support Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s 2027 presidential bid.
Malala said DCP had settled on Sifuna as a suitable candidate to represent the opposition in the race against President William Ruto, adding that the party was reaching out to other opposition leaders to build consensus around his candidacy.
“You have seen DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua meet Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna the other day. They are united,” Malala said.
“We have said we also want to talk to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. We want him to support Sifuna.”
He added: “On Monday, we are going to meet Kalonzo. In DCP, we have agreed Sifuna is up to the task.”
The planned meeting comes as opposition leaders intensify consultations on the possibility of fielding a joint presidential candidate to challenge Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Malala’s remarks signal DCP’s intention to push Sifuna’s candidacy as discussions continue among opposition figures seeking to consolidate their political support ahead of the polls.
The latest initiative follows a meeting between Gachagua and Sifuna at the former Deputy President’s Wamunyoro rural residence in Nyeri County on Tuesday, shortly after Gachagua returned to Kenya from the United States.
The meeting brought together leaders from the DCP and Linda Mwananchi camps, including former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo, Linda Mwananchi head of communication Pauline Njoroge, DCP Secretary General John Methu and Malala.
The leaders discussed political cooperation and possible joint rallies as opposition figures explore ways to coordinate their campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gachagua has been seeking to strengthen ties with opposition leaders as negotiations over a possible joint political front gather pace.
The planned engagement with Kalonzo also comes as Ruto steps up his political outreach in Ukambani, the Wiper leader’s political backyard, in an effort to consolidate support ahead of the elections.
While several opposition figures have been mentioned in discussions about a possible joint ticket, the question of who will carry the coalition’s presidential flag remains unresolved.
The emerging political alignment includes Kalonzo, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa and Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi, alongside Gachagua and Sifuna.
Malala eyes Kakamega governor seat
“I have worked a lot to get about eight million votes from Mt Kenya. So I am saying if Sifuna is the presidential candidate, I will contest the Kakamega governor seat,” he said.
The former Kakamega senator urged young Kenyans to participate in the electoral process by registering as voters.
“I ask you to stand with me. The youth, I ask you to register as voters,” Malala said.
The proposed meeting with Kalonzo is expected to test DCP’s efforts to rally support for Sifuna as opposition leaders weigh their options ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
