Kenyan musician Kevin Bahati has challenged popular assumptions surrounding physical intimacy in marriage. Speaking during a candid video discussion with his wife, Diana Marua, the artist addressed what he considers the single largest misconception people hold about married life.
According to Bahati, many individuals mistakenly believe that married couples engage in physical intimacy every day. He explained that in reality, daily routines and life pressures can leave married partners feeling far more starved of intimacy than couples who are merely dating.
“Many people assume in marriage, lovemaking is done daily, but in reality, people are sometimes more starved than those in dating,” he said.
The Reality of Marital Intimacy
Bahati explained that building a life together requires balancing professional ambitions, parenting duties, and household commitments. He noted that time becomes constrained as partners work to establish stability and secure their family's financial future.

“Huko kwa kina ndoa unaweza nyimwa na uko nayo hapo. Sijui shida sometimes huwa gani. I saw someone wrote on social media that ‘kupewa nje ni rahisi kuliko kwa kina ndoa’, and I was like, ‘hii ni kama ni ukweli’. I wanted to send it to you but I knew you’d ask how did I knew,” he added.
During the conversation, Bahati stressed that physical and emotional closeness requires intentional effort rather than passive expectation. He noted that no partner is ever genuinely too busy, explaining that it ultimately comes down to whether a spouse chooses to make their partner a priority.
Intentional Effort Over Emotion
Diana Marua supported her husband’s perspective, reminding viewers that a healthy marriage demands continuous work. She highlighted that couples must actively schedule time to reconnect away from work obligations and parental duties.
Bahati noted that while romantic feelings provide an initial foundation, commitment and resilience carry a couple through challenging seasons.
He added that spouses must deliberately create moments to rekindle their connection and discuss each other's emotional wellbeing.
Relationship Statistics
The couple, who tied the knot in 2017, have built a massive online following across East Africa. Diana’s YouTube channel boasts over 1.3 million subscribers, attracting hundreds of thousands of views per episode.
Over their years together, the pair have openly discussed their personal growth, including navigating initial hurdles during their first two years of marriage.

Global relationship studies indicate that physical intimacy among married couples averages approximately once a week. This statistic contrasts sharply with popular myths of daily encounters.
Furthermore, research reveals that roughly 65 per cent of long-term married couples experience extended periods of intimacy decline due to work stress, childcare responsibilities, and chronic fatigue.
Bahati concluded that marriage should be approached with clear purpose and dedication. He urged partners to make deliberate daily choices to prioritise one another regardless of external pressures.
