Four suspects have been arrested in a multi-county crackdown on suspected narcotics trafficking in Kisii, Kitui and Kajiado counties, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has said.
In a statement posted on X, the DCI said detectives seized cannabis, chang’aa, cigarettes suspected to be counterfeit and other items during separate operations in the three counties.
In Riosiri, Kisii, detectives raided a house following a tip-off from a member of the public and recovered 1.63kg of cannabis, 70 litres of chang’aa, 23 packets of cigarettes suspected to be counterfeit and a box of cigarette-rolling materials.
The suspect was arrested and placed in custody pending arraignment, the DCI said.
In Kitui, a multi-agency security team manning a roadblock along the Thika-Garissa Highway in Kanyonyoo intercepted a passenger bus travelling from Nairobi towards Garissa.
A search of passengers and their luggage led to the recovery of 30 rolls of bhang and rolling papers from a backpack belonging to a passenger.
The DCI said preliminary investigations indicated that the passenger had bought the consignment in Gatitu, Thika, and was transporting it to Ukasi Market in Mwingi East for sale. He was arrested and taken to Kanyonyoo Police Station.
In Kajiado county, detectives from DCI Kajiado South, working with officers from Kimana Police Station, intercepted a white Toyota Sienta along the Oloitoktok-Emali Road following a tip-off.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of four sacks of bhang. Three suspects were arrested in connection with the consignment, according to the DCI.
The agency said it was continuing operations targeting suspected drug traffickers and dealers in illicit substances, citing intelligence-led operations, cooperation among security agencies and information from members of the public.
