National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has dismissed the opposition’s chances of unseating President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, saying none of its current leaders has the capacity to defeat him.
Wetang’ula praised Ruto’s performance, saying the President had done a tremendous job and deserved support in next year’s elections.
He said the presidency was a serious responsibility that should be entrusted to a leader with proven experience rather than subjected to political gamble.
“The Presidency is a serious responsibility that we cannot gamble with as a country and thus should be entrusted to a leader with proven experience, as has historically been the case over the years,” he said.
“I do not see any current opposition leader with the capacity to wrestle power from President William Ruto, who has done a tremendous job.”
Wetang’ula spoke during a boda boda empowerment drive at Matulo Girls Secondary School in Webuye West, Bungoma County, organised by Senator Wafula Wakoli.
The Speaker also declared his interest in the presidency in 2032, saying the Luhya community had a realistic opportunity to produce a head of state.
“For the Luhya nation, 2032 presents a realistic opportunity to produce a President, and I do not shy away from saying that I have all the qualities and requisite experience to lead this country in 2032,” he said.
Wetang’ula said his support for Ruto in 2027 was part of the strategy to secure the community’s place in the 2032 succession race.
“This is why we have rallied behind President Ruto and will support him to the last person in next year’s elections so that we can secure our rightful place in 2032,” he said.
He added that he was ready to complete the political journey started by former Luhya leaders Masinde Muliro and Michael Kijana Wamalwa.
The event was attended by Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet, Kimilili MP Didimus Barasa, Webuye East MP Martin Wanyonyi, Likuyani MP Innocent Mugabe and other leaders.
In August, Wetang’ula said the Luhya community was closer than ever to producing a president and urged its leaders to adopt a strategic approach to the 2027 elections.
He argued that supporting President Ruto’s re-election could create an opportunity for the community to succeed him in future.
“I have the experience and the ability to help deliver this dream,” he said, adding that Ruto’s development record speaks for itself.
The Speaker challenged senior government officials from Western Kenya to use their positions to promote development and economic empowerment in the region.
“Many senior government officers from our region shy away from supporting our people. Their presence in their rural homes has not been felt at all,” he said.
