Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has alleged that goons vandalised her vehicle during Mashujaa Day celebrations at Githongo Stadium on Tuesday.

Mwangaza claimed that a group attacked her entourage as they attempted to access the stadium, where national celebrations were being held.

Photos and videos shared on her social media pages showed her high-end vehicle with visible damage.

A close associate of the former governor claimed that the group physically blocked their way into the venue, alleging that a politician led the confrontation.

Before the incident, Mwangaza had raised concerns about an alleged plot to mobilise individuals, some reportedly armed with pangas, and transport them towards Meru town.

“...sponsored goons on a mission to kill Kawira Mwangaza...,” she said in a warning posted online.

She alleged that the individuals were being assembled at a meeting point before being ferried along the Maua–Meru route.

The former governor claimed that the mobilisation was part of a plan to intimidate her, although the allegations could not be independently verified.

Mwangaza rose from grassroots activism to become Meru's first female governor in the 2022 General Election, when she defeated incumbent Kiraitu Murungi and then-Senator Mithika Linturi on an independent ticket.

Her political journey began with an unsuccessful bid for the Buuri parliamentary seat in 2013. She later won the Meru Woman Representative seat in 2017, building a grassroots following through community initiatives, including Operation Okolea, which focused on supporting vulnerable families.

Her election as governor in August 2022 marked a significant political breakthrough, but her tenure was soon characterised by persistent disputes with the Meru County Assembly.

MCAs repeatedly initiated impeachment proceedings against her, citing allegations that included gross misconduct, constitutional violations and abuse of office.

Mwangaza survived two attempts before the Senate upheld a third impeachment motion in August 2024.

She challenged her removal in court, but the High Court dismissed her petition on March 14, 2025, bringing her tenure to an end. Her former deputy, Isaac Mutuma, succeeded her.

Since leaving office, Mwangaza has continued to position herself in Meru's political landscape as leaders begin aligning ahead of the 2027 General Election.

She has recently aligned herself with the Linda Mwananchi faction, a political movement associated with leaders challenging the direction of the country's current political establishment.
