Ndia MP George Kariuki has expressed displeasure, claiming he was not involved in Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s visit to the constituency to launch development projects.
Kariuki spoke on Saturday, a day after Kindiki toured Ndia Constituency in Kirinyaga county on Friday, October 16, to launch road construction and electricity connection initiatives.
The projects included the tarmacking of the Kiania-Kiaragana-Kaharo and Rwamuthambi-Nderiti roads, as well as the distribution of last-mile electricity connection materials to the Kamagoti/Muthangaini and Njubi areas.
Addressing residents, Kariuki cited his role as chairperson of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, saying it gave him insight into road projects and their funding across the country.
“I am the one who knows what goes on in all the roads in Kenya because I am the one who authorises roads’ budget. I am the one who knows which roads we are constructing, even those that are in our area,” he said.
The MP also recounted questions he said had been raised about development projects undertaken in his constituency.
“I saw some people running about here yesterday to come and face me. They were asking, ‘Where has GK constructed roads so that we can come and launch them?’” he said.
Kariuki said he was absent during the Deputy President’s visit because he had been attending a meeting and running other errands.
He also questioned Kindiki’s engagement with residents, saying the Deputy President had not visited the area since assuming office.
“Since he was handed that position, he has never come to your area. And he wants you to hand him another five years,” Kariuki said.
Kindiki has been conducting development tours across the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election, as leaders continue to engage residents on government projects and local development priorities.
Kariuki is among the leaders whose names have featured in discussions about potential contenders for the running-mate position should President William Ruto seek re-election.
