The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) headquarters at Integrity Centre, Nairobi/FILEThe Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a clerical officer attached to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) headquarters over allegations of demanding Sh18,000 to facilitate the processing of a driving licence.
The commission said the officer was arrested on Wednesday following investigations into a complaint by a matatu driver who alleged that the officer had demanded the money to facilitate the issuance of the licence.
According to EACC, the officer was arrested within the NTSA headquarters premises while allegedly receiving Sh8,000, part of the Sh18,000 he was accused of demanding.
"He was taken to the Integrity Centre for processing and later released on a cash bail of Sh50,000 pending the conclusion of investigations," the commission said.
In its statement, EACC reiterated its commitment to tackling bribery in public service, saying the vice undermines public trust and affects citizens' access to quality services.
The commission said it aimed to restore public confidence in government institutions and ensure citizens could access services without being subjected to demands for bribes.
EACC has urged members of the public to report suspected corruption, including instances where public officers allegedly demand money to provide services through established procedures.
The commission said reports from members of the public help identify suspected corruption and support investigations into alleged misconduct in public offices.
