Social media commentator Maverick Aoko and Jaoko Oburu, son of ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga, have clashed online after a post by Aoko sparked a wave of speculation about the veteran politician’s wellbeing.
The drama unfolded on Tuesday evening, October 6, after Aoko took to X with a short but explosive message that quickly went viral.
Aoko's Viral Message
Aoko posted in capital letters:
“OBURU ODINGA YOUTH LEADER IS DEAD!”
The post contained no further explanation or attribution, immediately prompting reactions from social media users. The message was widely interpreted as being connected to reports surrounding ODM leader Oburu Oginga.
Her post caught the attention of Jaoko Oburu, who responded directly and criticised the manner in which the information had been shared.

Jaoko Calls Out Aoko
Jaoko did not mince his words when addressing the blogger.
Quoting Aoko’s post, he wrote:
“This is very careless of you Maverick Aoko.”
The brief response quickly attracted attention, with social media users joining the conversation and seeking clarification about Oburu’s actual condition.
Aoko later hit back at Jaoko, questioning why he had not directly denied the claim.
“You are not denying that he is dead. My condolences senior advisor. Wacha youth leader apumzike. Wajaluo pia wapate new beginning yawa, tho!”
The exchange added another layer to an already fast-moving social media storm.
ODM Moves to Set the Record Straight
As the reports continued circulating, Oburu’s secretariat issued a statement seeking to put the matter to rest.
The office dismissed the death reports as “malicious, unfounded fake news and propaganda” and assured Kenyans that Oburu was alive.
“We wish to assure the general public, members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the people of Siaya County, and the entire nation that Dr Oburu Oginga is well, safe, and in good spirits,” the statement said.
The secretariat explained that Oburu was observing doctors’ instructions to rest and limit heavy physical engagements but remained mentally alert and involved in party and national affairs.

Gladys Wanga Gives Health Update
ODM national chairperson Gladys Wanga also sought to reassure members of the public.
After visiting Oburu, Wanga said he was recovering steadily and was in good spirits.
“My PL Dr Oburu is recovering steadily. I was with him this evening and he is in high spirits. We continue to pray for his full recovery.”
Her statement provided another indication that the death reports circulating online were false.
Legal Action on the Table
Oburu’s secretariat further said it was consulting the ODM leadership on possible legal action over the circulation of the claims.
“We are in communication with the party leadership to handle the matter legally,” the office stated.
The incident has once again highlighted how quickly unverified claims involving prominent public figures can spread across social media.
While Aoko’s post triggered the controversy, statements from Oburu’s family, ODM officials and his office have since sought to reassure the public that the ODM leader is alive and recovering.
