Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has taken the government’s development push to Mathira, a constituency associated with his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua, as he stepped up inspections of road projects across Nyeri County.
Kindiki on Tuesday, September 29, inspected the ongoing tarmacking of the Mung’etho-Thuthwa-Gathugu-Gakiti Road in Mathira Constituency, with the project expected to be completed within the next two months.
The visit comes as Kindiki continues to tour parts of Mt Kenya to inspect government projects and highlight the administration’s development agenda.
He said the ongoing road upgrades were aimed at improving connectivity, supporting agriculture and trade, and creating employment opportunities for residents.
“Paved road infrastructure will boost the local economy, boost the agricultural sector, ease movement of goods and people, create short-term jobs and promote trade,” Kindiki said.
The Deputy President said the Mung’etho-Thuthwa-Gathugu-Gakiti road was part of a wider programme targeting 775 kilometres of roads across Nyeri County at a cost of Sh45 billion.
Several roads are also being upgraded in Mathira, including the Muthua-Kiawarigi-Kabiruini, Kiamwangi-Kahuru-Gitemani and Karura-Kiawarigi roads.
Kindiki said the government had completed the Ndima-ini-Gatina Road as well as the Sagana-Karatina-Marua section of the Thika-Kenol-Sagana-Marua Dual Carriageway.
The dual carriageway is expected to be extended to Nyeri Town, further improving connectivity between the county and neighbouring areas.
Kindiki said better roads would help farmers move produce to markets while easing access to trading centres and other economic facilities.
He was accompanied by Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge, Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina, MCAs and other local leaders.
