Langata MP Felix Odiwuor alias Jalang’o has challenged salaried Kenyans to rethink their relationship with monthly pay, urging them to build additional income streams and work towards financial independence.

Speaking during an interview with Tony Mwirigi on the 1M Podcast, the Langata MP challenged workers to look beyond their pay slips and find other ways of making money.

According to Jalang’o, employment can provide stability, but relying entirely on one salary throughout the year can limit a person’s financial freedom.

“Usikubali kulipwa mara 12 Kwa Mwaka,” Jalang’o said, encouraging people to explore opportunities that can generate income beyond their regular jobs.

‘Mwaka iko na siku 365’

Jalang’o used the number of days in a year to drive his message home, questioning why someone should depend on only 12 salary payments despite having 365 days in which they can pursue other opportunities.

“Mwaka iko na siku 365, tafuta njia ujitoe minyororo ya salary,” he said.

For Jalang’o, the issue is not necessarily having a job, but allowing a salary to become the only source of income.

He encouraged workers to consider their skills, talents, businesses and other legitimate opportunities as possible ways of creating additional revenue.

Salary can become a ‘chain’

Jalang’o’s argument was that a monthly paycheck should provide stability while also giving an individual room to build something beyond employment.

The media personality has often spoken about business, entrepreneurship and the importance of creating opportunities outside formal employment.

His latest remarks have reignited conversations around the Kenyan culture of side hustles, with many young professionals increasingly seeking alternative income streams to supplement their salaries.

However, building another source of income is not always easy. Time constraints, limited capital, workplace policies and personal responsibilities can make it difficult for employees to pursue businesses or side ventures.
