Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has linked the ongoing expansion of road infrastructure in Nyeri to job creation and the revival of local businesses, as the government steps up development projects in the county.
Kindiki said the ongoing paving of roads in Chaka and Naro Moru townships in Kieni Constituency would be extended to Kiawara, with the aim of improving the urban centres and replacing dirt roads with modern paved streets.
The Deputy President spoke on Friday while inspecting the Chaka Township roads, where he committed to providing resources to expand the project and cover additional carriageways.
He said the works formed part of a wider programme to upgrade 775 kilometres of roads across Nyeri County at a cost of Sh45 billion.
“The ongoing paving of roads in Chaka and Naro Moru Townships in Kieni Constituency will be extended to Kiawara, to modernise the urban centres and do away with dirt, mud and dust, “he said.
According to Kindiki, the road programme was creating opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers while providing business for the local construction industry.
“The Government has fully revived the road sector and is building Kenya’s future kilometre by kilometre,” he said.
The road investment comes as the national government pushes to accelerate stalled infrastructure projects after clearing outstanding payments to contractors.
Kindiki said earlier this week that Sh179 billion in pending road-contractor bills had been paid, with additional resources allocated to ongoing and new projects.
The government has also described road construction as a way of improving access to markets and reducing the cost of moving people and goods, particularly in agricultural areas.
In Nyeri, the expansion of the township roads is expected to improve movement within Chaka, Naro Moru and, eventually, Kiawara as the government seeks to modernise the growing centres.
Kindiki's latest visit comes days after he inspected other development projects in the wider Mt Kenya region, where infrastructure has featured prominently in his public engagements.
Earlier this month, he announced a Sh39 billion road programme in Meru County, saying the projects would improve rural connectivity, reduce transport costs and enhance farmers' access to markets.
The Deputy President was accompanied during the Nyeri tour by Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina, Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, Othaya MP Wambugu Wainaina, Energy PS Alex Wachira, MCAs and other leaders.
