Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has narrated a bizarre late-night encounter involving an official county vehicle, after allegedly spotting it ferrying women around Nyeri town.

Speaking in Nyeri town on September 19, 2026, Kahiga claimed he was driving around between 11pm and midnight when he spotted a county vehicle attached to Deputy Governor David Kinaniri.

Instead of driving past, the governor said he decided to follow the vehicle to establish what it was doing on the road at such a late hour.

Kahiga Follows The Mystery Car

According to Kahiga, the vehicle eventually stopped at Wendo Coffee, where several women allegedly came out and boarded the county car.

The governor narrated the incident in a mixture of English and Swahili, saying, “I was driving at around 11, 12 midnight hapo then naona gari yetu inadriviwa ikisimamishwa Wendo. Warembo wanatoka wanaingia, wengine wanaingizwa huko.”

Kahiga claimed he continued following the vehicle as the passengers were allegedly dropped off at different locations.

The governor then said he contacted one of his deputies to find out whether he knew what was happening.

‘DG Anasema Hata Hajui’ 😂

According to Kahiga, the Deputy Governor denied knowledge of the vehicle's alleged late-night activities.

“Nikauliza DG; yeye anasema hata hajui maneno hayo,” Kahiga said.

He claimed the driver continued moving around Nyeri, dropping the women at different destinations as he followed behind.

The governor also raised concerns over the amount of fuel being consumed by the official vehicle.

Kahiga said he had initially suspected that the fuel expenditure could have been connected to someone's political activities.

But, according to his account, the reality appeared quite different.

“Aliwabeba akaanza kwenda akiwadrop kila mtu; huyu hapa, mwingine pale… Mimi nafikiria mafuta mingi inatumika, watu wanafanya campaigns kumbe ni warembo,” Kahiga said.

County Car, Midnight Mystery

Kahiga's remarks have sparked questions about the use of county government vehicles outside official duties.

However, the claims about the women and their purpose for travelling in the vehicle remain allegations made by the governor. The reports do not independently establish why the passengers were picked up or whether the trips were authorised.

The controversy comes as the national government moves to strengthen monitoring of official vehicles through a real-time tracking system expected to monitor authorised drivers, fuel consumption, mileage and maintenance records.
