Bethlehem Bayu Taye, the Second Secretary for Public Diplomacy at the Embassy of EthiopiaA Brotherhood Forged in History
The relationship between Ethiopia and Kenya is not merely diplomatic; it is familial, historic, and deeply foundational. As we usher in our New Year, I reflect with immense gratitude on the warmth and hospitality of the Kenyan government and the magnificent people of Kenya. Kenya has not only been a neighbour but a second home for us.
Our shared history is etched in the struggle for African dignity. From the historic camaraderie between our founding fathers, Emperor Haile Selassie I and Mzee Jomo Kenyatta to our joint efforts in pioneering regional integration through the LAPSSET corridor, cross-border trade relations, the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA), and the Energy sector, our bond is unbreakable. We share borders, we share cultures, and more importantly, we share a vision for a prosperous Africa.
The Magic of the 13th Month
The legendary travel writer Bradt once described Ethiopia as "one of Africa’s most intoxicating countries." Our ancient historical heritage, the mosaic of our diverse peoples, and our immense natural beauty create a unique, proud identity completely distinct from anywhere else on earth. We like to say that Ethiopia is a tourism fruit of all seasons. For decades, our iconic brand name was "13 Months of Sunshine."
How does a year have 13 months? Ethiopia uniquely preserves its very own ancient calendar. Based on the older Julian way of counting, our calendar has 12 months that are exactly 30 days each, followed by a special 13th month called Pagume, which has only 5 or 6 days.
This presents a very generous, once-in-a-lifetime proposition to my Kenyan friends: Who wants to instantly become seven years younger than their actual age right now? Simply by crossing the border into Ethiopia, you can do exactly that. Because our calendar trails the Gregorian system, we are just now welcoming the year 2019.
Unlocking African Wealth: A Call to Investors
Stretching across more than 1.1 million square kilometers, Ethiopia is the eighth-largest country in Africa and home to a vibrant, young population of over 120 million people. Situated at a strategic geopolitical corridor, we serve as the gateway connecting Africa, the Middle East, and major trade networks.
As we enter this new year, Ethiopia is undergoing an unprecedented economic transformation. We are opening our doors wide, actively prioritizing robust partnerships in high-yield sectors as Agriculture & Agro-processing, Mining, Manufacturing, Green energy and more.
In advancing this vision of shared prosperity, H.E Prime minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has continuously pushed the boundaries of what African nations can achieve when we unite our economic strengths. Echoing his historic call to the global community, the African diaspora, and regional partners, he reminded us:
"Africa’s economic renaissance will be built by those who see its challenges as frontiers for innovation. We call upon our African brothers, sisters, and the global diaspora to bring your knowledge, capital, and networks home. Partner with us, invest in Ethiopia, and let us co-author the next chapter of African greatness."
An Open Invitation
When we say Ethiopia is the "Land of Origins," we mean it literally. It is the cradle of humanity where our oldest hominid ancestor, Lucy, was discovered. It is the proud source of the mighty Blue Nile, whose waters nurtured ancient civilizations, and the undisputed birthplace of Coffee Arabica, our daily gift to global civilization.
As we step into 2019, this is my heartfelt invitation to the people of Kenya, our entrepreneurs, our neighbors, and our friends. Explore the vast tourism resources and unparalleled investment horizons that Ethiopia offers. When you invest in or visit Ethiopia, you are anchoring yourself at the center of the world.
To the government and the people of Kenya, thank you for walking beside us and for sharing in our journey.
