The government has expanded irrigation infrastructure as part of efforts to reduce Kenya’s reliance on increasingly unreliable rainfall and strengthen food production across the country. Official data shows the area under irrigation grew from about 664,000 acres in 2022 to 744,340 acres by December 2024, following investments in irrigation schemes, dams, water pans and canals. The government is now targeting more than 1.28 million irrigated acres by 2027-28, with the expansion expected to increase agricultural production, strengthen food security and improve farmers’ resilience to climate change.
