President William Ruto’s daughter Charlene Ruto has opened up about what convinced her to accept a marriage proposal from Tanzanian technology entrepreneur Isaya Yunge.
Charlene spoke publicly about her relationship during the Miss International Kenya 2026 grand finale at Nairobi National Park on Saturday, August 22.
She attended the event alongside her brother, George Kimutai, marking her first public appearance since her traditional Koito ceremony with Yunge.
‘It Was Not Because He Is Tanzanian’

Charlene was asked what made her accept Yunge despite the couple coming from different countries.
She said his nationality was not a factor in her decision, instead pointing to his character and faith.
“First of all, I don't think I said yes to him because he is Tanzanian. It is the person that he is inside.”
“When I met him, I could tell that he is a man who knows God, who is after God, and for me, that's a big thing that I wanted in a man who I want to spend the rest of my life with.”
She described faith as an important requirement when choosing a life partner.
Intelligence and Purpose Also Impressed Her
Charlene said Yunge's personality extended beyond his faith.
She described him as intelligent and purposeful, qualities she said were important because she also considers herself a person driven by purpose.
“He is very intelligent, smart and has a purpose.”
She added that she believes Yunge is the person God had kept for her.
From Koito to Their Next Chapter
Charlene and Yunge held their traditional Koito ceremony on August 8 at the Ruto family's Intonna Heritage Farm in Kilgoris, Narok County.
The ceremony brought together members of both families and prominent guests. President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto publicly congratulated the couple and pledged their support.
Koito is a traditional Kalenjin pre-marriage ceremony in which the two families formally meet and affirm the union before the wedding.
Yunge has previously built a public profile through technology, entrepreneurship and youth empowerment. He is known for his work around SomaApp and other technology initiatives.
Charlene’s Views on Love
Charlene's latest remarks come shortly after an old interview resurfaced in which she discussed the kind of man she expected to marry. The throwback clip attracted attention because she eventually became engaged to a Tanzanian, rather than the Kenyan man she had previously mentioned.
