'If I will not be the opposition’s flag bearer, I will be the director of the presidential candidate’s campaign', former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said.
Speaking in Wamunyoro on Tuesday, Gachagua said the opposition’s best chance of winning the 2027 General Election is to unite behind a single presidential candidate.
He said he and his supporters were prepared to make sacrifices.
"The best way to win this election.. the most sure way or sure bet... is if opposition settles on one candidate," Gachagua said.
He pledged to fully support the candidate once one is identified, saying the opposition would work together to defeat President William Ruto in the next election which will take place in 2027.
“We will work on this thing and we will succeed in the next election and i want you people to relax,” he said.
Gachagua said he has agreed with his people on how to strategise ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Gachagua also called for an early partnership between his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) and Wiper Democratic Movement as the opposition engages other political parties.
“Between Wiper and DCP, I want to ask for a partnership as we engage the others. The more the merrier. I want us to first come together so that we walk towards success,” he said.
He dismissed claims that his growing political support could divide the opposition, saying he was among those most committed to the identification of a single presidential candidate.
“There are others who are saying I have many people and that I will break this united opposition. The most committed man in the identification of one presidential candidate is Rigathi Gachagua, because I want the best for the country,” he said.
Gachagua also cited his political experience, saying he had been involved in every presidential succession process since 1992.
“I am also very experienced and I have been involved in every succession from 1992,” he said.
