UEFA celebrated the appointment on social media, sharing an interview with Artan under the message, “Don’t ever stop dreaming.”

The European football governing body highlighted his journey from Somalia to the UEFA Super Cup, describing him as a referee who continues to “break new ground.”

“I was lucky, but I have worked hard to be here, and I’m really proud,” Artan said in the interview.

US Customs and Border Protection said he was found “inadmissible due to vetting concerns,” while FIFA confirmed that he would consequently be unable to train or officiate at the World Cup.

Reports said Artan had been detained for several hours before being returned to Istanbul, despite having been selected for the tournament.
