In recent years, the intersection of culture and politics in Kenya has been most visible at the traditional weddings of children belonging to the country’s top leaders.
These events are more than just family milestones. They serve as major networking hubs for the political elite.
Charlene Ruto and Isaya Yunge
The most recent high-profile union took place on August 8, 2026. President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto hosted a traditional Kalenjin ceremony for their daughter, Charlene, and Isaya Yunge, a prominent Tanzanian entrepreneur.
Known as a Koito engagement and farewell ceremony, it was held at the Intonna Heritage Farm in Narok County.
The event drew a massive delegation. Guests included Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
On Saturday, 13 September 2025, the son of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi held his traditional wedding. Moses Budamba Mudavadi married his partner, Qillian Ndeso Saiya, in a ceremony that continued the family’s string of high-profile events.
Senator Allan Chesang (November 2025)
Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang celebrated his traditional ceremonies across two dates in 2025. His traditional engagement occurred on Saturday, 12 July 2025. This was followed by a grand pre-wedding event in Kitale on Saturday, 1 November 2025, which President William Ruto attended.
Brian Kipkoech Belio and Nicole Chepkoech Langat
A traditional dowry ceremony, known as Tumdoab Kanyiook, was held on Saturday, 2 August 2025. Brian Kipkoech Belio, the son of Immigration PS Belio Kipsang, married Nicole Chepkoech Langat in Kapseret. The union linked two influential families and served as a significant networking occasion.
The daughter of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula held her traditional wedding in early April 2025. This cultural ceremony preceded her main white wedding, which took place shortly after on 18 April 2025.
James Kimoi Moi and Ivy Chebet Meli
On 14 September 2024, James Kimoi Moi, the son of KANU Chairman Gideon Moi, held his traditional wedding ceremony. The cultural union to his wife, Ivy Chebet Meli, was a notable event for the Moi family.
Damarie Saada Kalonzo (June 2024)
The daughter of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka held her traditional wedding on 29 June 2024. The ceremony took place in Yatta, Machakos County.
Earlier that same year, Kalonzo Musyoka’s son, Kelvin Muasya, married Sharon Nthoki. Their traditional wedding was held on 11 May 2024 at their home in Maanzoni, Machakos County.
Maryanne Mudavadi, daughter of Musalia Mudavadi, held two traditional ceremonies in 2023. Her Ruracio (dowry negotiation) was on 19 August 2023, followed by the Kuara Itara ceremony on 16 September 2023. Her white wedding followed on 28 October 2023.
Michael Orengo and Samantha Luseno (September 2023)
Michael Orengo, son of Siaya Governor James Orengo, held his traditional wedding on 9 September 2023. The dowry and nyombo ceremony took place in Vihiga County.
Nick Ruto and Evelyn Chemtai (January 2022)
President Ruto’s eldest son, Nick, married Evelyn Chemtai on Saturday, 15 January 2022. The Koito ceremony was held in Windy Ridge, Karen, and was attended by numerous governors and legislators.
June Ruto and Dr. Alexander Ezenagu (2021)
In 2021, the President’s eldest daughter, June Ruto, held a colourful Koito ceremony at their Karen home. This was followed by a subsequent white wedding.
In July 2019, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and lawyer Kamotho Waiganjo held a ngurario (traditional Kikuyu wedding). The event at Kiamugumo Primary School was famous for bringing together then-President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.
