His political journey began in 1999 when he was elected vice chairman of the Student Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU).
Entering civic leadership at age 22, he became the Central Ward councillor in Murang'a in 2002, serving until 2007.
During his tenure as councillor, he chaired the Murang'a Municipal Council Town Planning Committee. His political ascent continued with his election as Kiharu Member of Parliament, serving from March 2013 to August 2017, followed by a term as Murang'a Senator from August 2017 to August 2022.
Alongside his public service, Kang'ata established a distinguished legal career. He joined the University of Nairobi in 1997 to pursue a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and later earned a PhD in Law from the same institution.
Admitted to the Bar in 2007, his professional background includes working as a State Counsel in 2009 and managing his firm, Irungu Kang'ata & Company Advocates.
In recognition of his legislative work, philanthropy, and public service, Kang'ata received the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear state honour.
His leadership record includes recognition by research firm Infotrak, which named him Kenya's best-performing governor in February 2025 and again in August 2026, where he earned an 80% approval rating.
