High school students are increasingly turning to generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to support their schoolwork, according to the Artificial Intelligence Index Report 2026.
The report shows that the most common use of GenAI is conducting research and finding sources, cited by 51 per cent of students.
Editing or revising essays and brainstorming ideas follow closely, with 50 per cent each using AI for those tasks.
Another 41 per cent rely on the technology to explain complex concepts, while 30 per cent use it to learn new languages.
About 18 per cent employ GenAI to write code, and only two per cent use it for other purposes.
GenAI refers to artificial intelligence systems that generate text, images, code and other content based on user prompts.
The findings highlight AI's growing role as a learning aid, helping students improve productivity, enhance understanding and complete academic tasks more efficiently.
