The Global Terrorism Index 2026 shows that the Middle East and North Africa has experienced the highest toll from terrorism between 2007 and 2025, recording nearly 60,000 deaths.
The region also registered around 28,000 attacks over the period, underscoring its prolonged exposure to extremist violence and armed conflict.
Sub-Saharan Africa ranked second in terrorism-related deaths, with about 54,000 fatalities, while South Asia recorded roughly 47,000.
In terms of attacks, the Middle East and North Africa led the list, followed by South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Other regions, including the Asia-Pacific, South America, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Western and Central Europe, and North and Central America, reported significantly lower numbers of attacks and deaths during the period.
The findings highlight the uneven global impact of terrorism, with the heaviest burden concentrated in regions facing persistent conflict, political instability and the activities of violent extremist groups, according to the Global Terrorism Index 2026.
