Kenya is mourning the sudden loss of Elvis Otieno, a prominent youth leader and grassroots mobiliser. Fondly known as "Beast" or "Beast from the East," Otieno was a former President of the Technical University of Mombasa Students Association (TUMSA). He passed away on the night of 20 July 2026.
A Sudden Departure
The student community was shocked by the news of his death. Otieno collapsed during a meeting with his colleagues. This medical emergency occurred in Mombasa.
Just hours before his demise, he was at the university advocating for others. He visited the Office of the Vice Chancellor to help a fellow student. The student was at risk of missing exams due to unpaid fees.
Otieno had already secured a sponsor for them. This final act of service has been described as a "fitting reflection" of his life.
High-profile politicians have led the nation in paying tribute to the fallen leader. President William Ruto described him as an exceptional young Kenyan.
"Elvis Otieno, fondly known as Beast, was an exceptional young Kenyan who embraced the ideals of good governance early in life,” President William Ruto took to his socials.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino expressed deep personal grief over the loss. He described Otieno as more than just a friend.
"My heart is shattered knowing that I will never hear your voice again," Owino stated. He added, "Farewell, my dear friend. You left too soon, but you will never be forgotten."
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir also shared his condolences. He called the late leader a "colossus" with a "larger-than-life personality."
The Voice of the 'Comrades'
Otieno was a champion for student welfare. He was elected TUMSA President for the 2023/2024 academic year. During his tenure, he used the popular slogan "Comrades must enjoy."
He was known for negotiating with administrators to ensure students could access exams and financial support. Youth Affairs PS Fikirini Jacobs praised his consistency and mental agility.
Makadara MP George Aladwa, who also serves as the Nairobi ODM Chairman, recalled Otieno’s loyalty. He mentioned a recent visit Otieno made to him while he was in the hospital.
"Elvis was a dedicated young man who passionately believed in the ODM Party," Aladwa said.
Otieno's legacy remains one of selfless service, humility, courage, and unwavering commitment to humanity. His university fraternity continues to pray for strength for his family and friends during this difficult time.
