Bishop Hieronymus Joya of the Catholic Diocese of Maralal has suspended seven priests. The decision follows allegations of serious misconduct and violations of church law. This is the first major shakeup of this nature in the history of the diocese.
The priests have been relieved of all pastoral and priestly duties. They now face investigations into the abuse of ecclesiastical power and negligence in administration. There are also significant concerns regarding financial mismanagement.
A Crisis of Governance
Bishop Joya expressed his deep frustration in a detailed four-page letter to the church. He has led the diocese for three years. During this time, he cited a lack of support and the frequent mismanagement of resources.
The suspensions are linked to violations of Canon 277 of the Catholic Code of Canon Law. This canon governs the conduct and celibacy of the clergy. Specific allegations include priests consuming alcohol in public bars and other drinking establishments.
"No drinking alcohol in bars or in the parish institution house or going to any liturgical celebration drunk or with alcohol hangover,” he revealed to Citizen TV.
There are also claims of breaches regarding celibacy requirements. Some priests are accused of engaging in prohibited sexual relationships. This directly contradicts their vow to dedicate themselves to the Lord.
In response to these issues, Bishop Joya has unveiled strict new regulations. These reforms are intended to strengthen governance and accountability across the diocese. The Bishop has also announced new appointments to ensure church operations continue.
Going forward, priests must adhere to a strict 7:00 p.m. curfew. They are required to be at their houses by this time every night.
The Bishop was particularly firm regarding business dealings. He has ordered that priests remain focused solely on their spiritual duties.
"No priest should own business or be involved in any business except the business of God."
The decree also addresses property and personal relationships. "No priest should own or acquire property in the name of relatives property whose acquisition is questionable," the Bishop wrote. He added, "No priest should cohabit or engage himself in relationship with person of opposite sex or same sex."
Current Status of the Clergy
The seven priests are currently barred from celebrating mass in public. They cannot administer sacraments or carry out any official pastoral work while investigations are ongoing.
The Diocese of Maralal is located in Samburu County, Kenya. It was established in 1998 after being carved out of the Diocese of Marsabit. Bishop Hieronymus Joya, a member of the Consolata Missionaries, was appointed to the role by Pope Francis in 2022. He succeeded Bishop Virgilio Pante.
