A group of political leaders and public figures assembled at Milimani Law Courts on Friday morning as they awaited the arraignment of individuals arrested during Thursday’s Gen Z memorial demonstrations.
Among those present were Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Senator James Orengo and former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who arrived at court ahead of proceedings involving several protesters detained during the demonstrations.
The arrests followed nationwide commemorative protests held on 25 June to mark two years since the youth-led anti-government demonstrations of 2024. Authorities said hundreds of people were taken into custody across different parts of the country.
According to individuals following the matter, content creator and livestreamer Vindee and activist Mr Speaker Sir were among those detained and spent the night at Central Police Station awaiting their appearance before the court.

The demonstrations drew crowds in Nairobi and other towns, with many participants describing the gatherings as a memorial for those who lost their lives during the June 2024 protests. Police maintained a heavy security presence across the capital and restricted movement in parts of the city.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen later stated that a total of 355 people had been arrested nationwide in relation to the demonstrations and that suspects would face different charges depending on the circumstances of their arrest.

Outside Milimani Law Courts, supporters, legal teams and members of the public gathered as they waited for updates on the processing of those in custody.
The presence of senior political figures added attention to the proceedings, with some positioning themselves as observers of the legal process.
Babu Owino has previously appeared publicly in support of demonstrators and youth-led civic action, while Sonko has, in past protest-related incidents, offered legal and logistical support to arrested individuals.
Arrests during memorial demonstrations
Thursday’s demonstrations unfolded under heightened security measures in Nairobi. Police used crowd-control measures in parts of the city as groups attempted to gather and march.
Vindee’s arrest attracted attention online after videos circulated showing the streamer broadcasting events from Nairobi CBD before being detained. Reports indicated he had been livestreaming moments before officers moved in.
“They will be brought to court to face various charges,” Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen said after the demonstrations.
As court proceedings begin, attention now shifts to the charges to be presented and whether those arrested will be released on bail or remain in custody pending further hearings.
