Kenyan television viewers are overwhelmingly prioritising information over pure leisure, with news programming taking the lion's share of screen time across the country.
Data from the Communications Authority of Kenya’s quarterly audience measurement report for January to March 2026 reveals that news broadcasts command an impressive 46.1% of national television viewership. This massive engagement indicates that the evening news remains an essential, unmissable ritual for families gathered in living rooms nationwide.
Beyond the day’s headlines, scripted narrative and general entertainment act as the primary and secondary draw for audiences.
Entertainment and drama series pull in a strong 21.5% viewership share, while movies secure 13.0% of the audience's attention.
Sports and music programs run practically neck-and-neck in popularity, accounting for 11.1% and 11.0% respectively, reflecting a balanced appetite for live action and contemporary music countdowns.
The remaining television schedule sees fragmented attention across specific genres. Soap operas maintain a 4.7% loyal following, closely trailed by religious and inspirational programs at 3.2%, and educational or informative shows at 3.1%.
Comedy and light entertainment account for just 1.9% of viewer interest, while dedicated political coverage stands at 1.7%. Rounding out the broadcast preferences, talk shows capture the smallest slice of the audience at 1.6%.
While entertainment options remain diverse, it is clear that factual news reporting remains the ultimate anchor keeping Kenyans glued to their television screens.
