Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has revealed a surprising shift in lifestyle for both himself and his successor, Johnson Sakaja. During an impromptu visit by the sitting Governor to Sonko’s office on Thursday, 7 May 2026, the pair discussed city affairs and personal transformations.

Sonko shared details of the meeting in a video, noting that Sakaja has followed his lead in abandoning alcoholic drinks. The two leaders, who have often been on opposite sides of the political fence, spent their time together drinking coffee and tea instead of traditional refreshments.

A New Chapter for Sonko

The former Governor is currently navigating what he describes as a "salvation journey." He recently announced his intention to quit alcohol entirely to focus on his health and his faith.

As part of this transition, Sonko has even declared plans to sell his iconic nightclub, signaling a firm departure from his previous "party boy" persona.

He noted that he and Sakaja spent their meeting walking around the compound and discussing the future of the city.

"We had good time with the governor and one thing that I’m happy about is that he has also followed my path. We only consumed coffee and tea before strolling in the compound with the governor,” he said.

Sonko explained that his decision was driven by a desire to be faithful to God and to improve his physical well-being.

“I stopped consuming alcohol and I’ve been very faithful to God because I also want to lose weight,” Sonko said.

Supporting a Colleague in Grief

Beyond lifestyle changes, the meeting served a somber purpose. The two leaders came together to coordinate support for their former colleague, Anne Kananu, who recently lost her mother.

Sonko and Sakaja have been actively involved in funeral arrangements. They visited the hospital together during the mother’s final days in the Intensive Care Unit. During the office visit, they spoke via speakerphone with a committee handling the funeral logistics.

A Call for Political Peace

The meeting also featured a symbolic gesture of friendship. Sonko presented Sakaja with a sentimental gift—a carriage-style item—originally given to Sonko by a Speaker of the British Parliament.

As Kenya approaches its next election cycle, Sonko used the meeting to advocate for political maturity. He urged Kenyans to avoid the "politics of enmity" and insults, emphasizing that the country’s stability is more important than individual ambitions.

"This is a very small world. We should preach peace... Kenya is bigger than everyone of us," Sonko remarked.
