Why Certain Careers are Dating Dealbreakers for Women

Media personality Azeezah Hashim once stirred debate online after saying she could not date men who are fans of Andrew Tate and Andrew Kibe, describing such men as “toxic”.

Her remarks reopened conversations about relationships, trust, and why some professions or even online personalities can become red flags in dating.

Across Nairobi and other towns, many young women say career choices increasingly influence who they are willing to date.

For some, it is not about money or status. It is about lifestyle, trust, and emotional availability.

The Photographer Question

One profession that sparked mixed reactions was photography.

Several women interviewed said they would hesitate to date photographers because the job often involves interacting closely with many clients, especially women.

“I know it sounds insecure,” said Diana, a university student. “But photographers spend weekends at weddings, events, and shoots with beautiful clients all the time. It can become difficult not to overthink.”

Others argued that irregular working hours and constant social interaction can strain relationships.

Still, some defended the profession, saying trust matters more than occupation.

“Cheating is a character issue, not a job issue,” said Cynthia, a fashion entrepreneur.

Dating Police Officers

Police officers also featured prominently among careers that some women avoid dating.

Many cited long absences, transfers, and demanding schedules.

“You can go days without talking properly,” said Anne, whose previous partner worked in security services. “Sometimes they are deployed far away, and you don’t even know who they are spending time with.”

Research has shown that professions with long working hours and high stress levels can affect relationships and family stability. Shift work, frequent travel, and emotional pressure have been linked to communication difficulties among couples.

Some women admitted they fear emotional distance more than infidelity itself.
