Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has defended ongoing discussions between the ODM and UDA parties on zoning ahead of the 2027 elections.
Nassir said such dialogue is important in managing political competition in the Coast region and promoting stability in Mombasa County ahead of the polls.
The ODM deputy party leader said zoning discussions are aimed at reducing rivalry and strengthening coordination among leaders in the region.
His remarks come after renewed political activity following UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar’s announcement that he intends to contest the Mombasa governor seat in 2027. Omar’s declaration has drawn attention to the emerging political contest in the Coast region.
Speaking on a podcast with Alex Mwakideu, Nassir said ODM is not pursuing territorial control in Mombasa politics, adding that such narratives do not reflect the party’s wider national approach.
He said zoning discussions were informed by by-election experiences across the country, where parties often avoid splitting votes by agreeing on single candidates to maintain unity and electoral strength.
He also argued that zoning
already exists at national level, citing
President William Ruto’s election as
an example of political consolidation
and negotiated alliances that shape
leadership outcomes in Kenya.
He noted that zoning discussions are informed by past electoral experiences, where parties in some instances have agreed on joint approaches to avoid splitting votes and to strengthen electoral competitiveness.
He acknowledged that political competition can be intense but said dialogue and consultation remain important tools in addressing differences and promoting cohesion.
Nassir added that leaders from ODM and UDA have engaged in consultations aimed at fostering stability in the region under broader political cooperation frameworks, with the goal of ensuring that competition does not undermine development priorities.
He confirmed that ODM and UDA central committees have begun structured engagement, including meetings and consultations, to explore areas of cooperation ahead of the elections. However, he noted that formal coalition negotiations have not yet commenced.
Nassir said ODM has consistently supported dialogue in political engagement, saying such processes contribute to long-term stability and peace-building.
He also referenced past political reconciliations between national leaders as examples of efforts aimed at promoting unity during periods of political tension.
As the 2027 elections approach, Nassir said continued dialogue between political actors remains important in managing competition, strengthening service delivery, and ensuring that political activity supports broader development goals.
