President William Ruto’s party has met an aspirant for the Murang’a Senate seat just days after Governor Irungu Kangata announced that he will not seek re-election on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket in the 2027 General Election.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan hosted Murang’a UDA senatorial aspirant Patrick Muigai for a consultative session at the party headquarters, Hustler Plaza, Nairobi.
The party said in a statement that the meeting was used to discuss ways in which it will rebuild its popularity.
“They discussed various strategies aimed at the further popularisation of the Broad-based government's development programmes and to explore various strategies to strengthen UDA's grassroots presence as we approach the 2027 general elections,” read a statement by UDA.
After the meeting, Muigai wrote on his Facebook page that he was humbled and honoured to be received and endorsed for the UDA senatorial bid by the Secretary General of the UDA party, Hassan Omar, at the party headquarters.
“This endorsement strengthens our resolve to continue building a strong, people-driven movement across Murang’a. The journey continues,” the post stated.
Omar’s meeting with Muigai came just three days after President Ruto referred to him as “Senator wetu” during a harambee at AIC Githumu Church in Saba Saba last Sunday.
During different stops across Murang’a, from Mathioya, Kiharu TVET, Murang’a Town, Kandara, Ciumbu, Saba Saba, Kabati, Kangari, and Gatura, Muigai was given a platform to popularise his name against incumbent Joe Nyutu, who is allied to DCP.
A few months ago, Nyutu reaffirmed that he was still a member of UDA despite backing the opposition, but said he would not resign.
“I am still a member of UDA, and I shall remain there until I decide to leave. I will leave UDA when I want,” Nyutu said.
On Sunday, Governor Kangata said the party that was overwhelmingly voted in the region during the last polls had lost popularity, and announced that he will not seek re-election on the UDA ticket in the 2027 General Election.
Just like Nyutu, Kangata said he will not leave UDA for now but will seek re-election on a different party.
