Recent global data from April 2026 indicates that finding information is the top priority for users aged 16 and older, with 60.1% of the population citing it as a primary reason for going online.
This pursuit of knowledge is closely followed by the need for social maintenance, as 57.7 per cent of users utilise digital platforms to stay in touch with friends and family.
Beyond information and connection, the internet has firmly established itself as a central hub for entertainment and news.
Over half of the global user base, approximately 53.4 per cent, leans on the web for watching videos, TV shows, or movies. Simultaneously, 51.4 per cent of users rely on digital channels to keep up to date with news and events, highlighting the internet's role as a primary source of real-time reporting.
Practical utility also ranks high, with 48.5 per cent of individuals researching how to do things, turning the web into a massive, interactive manual for daily life.
The digital landscape also serves as a significant cultural and recreational outlet. According to the Digital 2026 Mid-Year Global Update Report, 45.4 per cent of users access and listen to music online, while 44.7 per cent seek new ideas or inspiration.
Even during moments of leisure, the internet is the go-to destination, with 44.1 per cent of people using it to fill spare time or for general browsing.
Finally, commercial and aspirational interests round out the top reasons for usage, with 43.2 per cent researching products and brands, and 36.9% investigating places, vacations, and travel opportunities.
