The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority has issued a high flood alert along the Tana River, warning that rising water levels could trigger flooding in parts of the basin over the next few days.
In its latest flood early warning bulletin, the agency said moderate to heavy rainfall is expected between April 28 and May 4, following sustained rains in the past week.
Water levels at the Garissa gauge station are projected to rise to about 6.4 metres by May 2—well above the 5.0-metre flood warning threshold.
“This level indicates a high likelihood of flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas,” the agency said in the advisory.
Areas flagged as high risk include Garissa, Hola and Garsen, where communities living near riverbanks have been urged to remain on high alert.
The authority warned that flooding could disrupt transport, displace residents and affect livelihoods across the basin.
Residents have been advised to avoid crossing flooded roads and rivers, move to higher ground where necessary, and follow guidance from local authorities and emergency teams.
The agency further urged the public to monitor updates through official channels of the Kenya Meteorological Department as the situation evolves.
At least 112 people have died in recent floods that followed days of heavy rain across the country, the National Police Service (NPS) said in its latest update on April 3, 2026.
In its nationwide safety advisory, the authorities urged Kenyans to exercise caution during the ongoing Easter holiday period, highlighting the heightened risks associated with travel and outdoor activities.
The police emphasised that vigilance remains critical in preventing further loss of life.
"With 112 lives lost due to the rains as of 3rd April 2026, the National Police Service appeals to all Kenyans to prioritise safety, particularly given the combination of adverse weather conditions and increased movement of people across the country during the holiday period," the advisory stated.
Motorists are advised to drive carefully, observe speed limits, maintain safe distances, avoid flooded roads, and ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition.
Pedestrians are also encouraged to remain alert, particularly in areas prone to flooding or with limited visibility.
The advisory comes as rainfall continues to impact several regions across the country, causing road closures, waterlogging, and damage to drainage systems.
