Landslide on Iten–Kabarnet Road/KeNHA

Traffic flow has been restored along the Iten–Kabarnet Road near Kolol following disruption caused by a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall.

Director General of the Kenya National Highways Authority Luka Kimeli, confirmed the reopening, saying the affected section had been cleared after being blocked by debris.

“Traffic flow along the Iten–Kabarnet Road near Kolol has been restored,” Kimeli said.

He noted that the landslide resulted from ongoing heavy rains experienced across the country, which had temporarily cut off movement along the route.

KeNHA said the incident occurred near Kolol, cutting off access along the affected stretch.

“Due to ongoing heavy rainfall across the country, a landslide has occurred along the Iten–Kabarnet Road near Kolol, blocking the affected section,” the authority said.

The incident comes amid a period of sustained rainfall that has been pounding many parts of the country, often falling during the night and early morning hours.

The Kenya Meteorological Department warned of intensified rains and strong winds expected between April 24 and May 1, 2026. In the advisory, acting director Edward Muriuki said rainfall exceeding 20mm within 24 hours was likely across large sections of the country.

The forecast highlighted several high-risk regions, including the Highlands both east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and parts of Northwestern, Northeastern, and Southeastern Kenya.
