The Mombasa government has unveiled an ambitious healthcare expansion plan in which four new hospitals will be constructed at a cost of nearly Sh1 billion.

This marks a major push to improve access to medical services.

Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, who spoke during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Raila Odinga Kongowea Hospital, said the facility in will cost Sh250 million and is part of a broader strategy to decentralise healthcare.

“This hospital is going to be one of the largest in the region after Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital,” he said.

“It reflects our commitment to bringing quality healthcare services closer to the people.”

In addition to the Kongowea facility, the county will build three more hospitals in Mikindani, Likoni and Port Reitz, targeting underserved areas that have long struggled with limited access to health services.

Once complete, the four hospitals are expected to significantly reduce congestion at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, which currently serves as the main referral facility for the county.

The expansion builds on ongoing investments in the health sector, including the completion of a level 3 hospital in Mjambere and planned rehabilitation works at Coast General.

Nassir said the initiative is part of a wider healthcare reform agenda focused on strengthening primary care, integrating community health promoters, improving service delivery through customer care certification, and scaling up registration under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

“Health remains a key pillar of our development agenda. We will be judged by what we deliver for the people,” he said.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who attended the ceremony, lauded the project, describing it as a clear demonstration of development-focused leadership.

“This is meaningful progress for the people of Mombasa. Leadership must remain focused on delivering services that improve lives,” she said.

Wanga said counties under ODM leadership continue to prioritise essential sectors such as health and education, urging leaders to remain accountable to citizens’ needs.

Governor Nassir’s Sh1 billion hospital expansion signals a deliberate shift towards decentralised healthcare in Mombasa, targeting long-standing pressure on the Coast General facility. By distributing infrastructure to Mikindani, Likoni, Port Reitz and Kongowea, the plan addresses both population growth and inequitable access.
