Renowned Ugandan comedienne Anne Kansiime has shared a deeply personal revelation about her love life, shocking many with her admission that she once paid her own dowry to meet family expectations.

In a candid conversation with Wonder Jr, Kansiime explained that despite appearances, she has never truly been a wife in the traditional sense because her former partner did not fulfill the dowry her parents requested.

Kansiime was previously married to Gerald Ojok for four years before their marriage ended in divorce around 2017. Following that, she began a relationship with fellow artist Skylanta in 2018, with whom she welcomed a child.

Reflecting on her first marriage, Kansiime revealed that she ended up paying her own dowry after her then-husband failed to meet her parents’ demands. She described living through a relationship that, in retrospect, was more of an illusion than a traditional marriage. The realization came later, when she struggled to conceive, which she interpreted as a sign from God.

“I never truly became a wife,” Kansiime said. “I paid my own dowry, convinced everyone, including him, that we were married. But if a man doesn’t honor what your parents ask for, can it really be called a marriage?”

She recounted introducing her partner to her family, who then requested the dowry, which he failed to provide. Feeling the pressure to maintain appearances, Kansiime took matters into her own hands. “I paid the dowry myself, we moved on, and I forgot about it,” she admitted.

It wasn’t until she turned 30 and was trying to start a family that she reflected on the challenges she faced. “I wondered why God wasn’t giving me a child, despite all the blessings in my life. It made me think deeply,” she said.

Kansiime explained that her desire to honor her parents and her commitment to making the relationship work led her to take these steps. “I wanted to do things right and have a child so badly,” she shared, highlighting the emotional complexity behind her choices.

Her story resonates as a reminder of the pressures many face to conform to family expectations, and the courage it takes to navigate love on one’s own terms.
