Nairobi County official Geoffrey Mosiria has challenged the National Police Service over what he describes as a perceived imbalance in how criminal cases are handled.

Mosiria, the officer in charge of Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, voiced his concerns following the rapid arrest of a suspect in the high-profile Mary Claire acid attack.

He is now asking why the same speed has not been applied to the hunt for Gladwel Kagai. Kagai is the primary suspect in a brutal assault on Steve Godia that occurred nearly a month ago.

The Call for Consistency

In a statement shared on social media, Mosiria urged the Inspector General of Police to intervene immediately. He highlighted that while the law must be applied fairly, there appears to be a disparity in how quickly justice is served.

“I am concerned about the case involving Gladwell Kagai, who is alleged to have burned Steve Godia, and yet she is still not in police custody,” Mosiria said.

Mosiria’s appeal specifically used the phrase "Justice for Boychild" to draw attention to the case.

“The same urgency and efficiency that were demonstrated in the case of Claire, where the suspect was swiftly arrested, should equally be applied in this matter involving Gladwel Kagai,” Mosiria added..

Mosiria’s remarks come shortly after the arrest of Elvis Opiyo, the main suspect in the attack on 24-year-old Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) singer Mary Claire.

Opiyo was apprehended following a coordinated sting operation on 23rd March, just days after the 17th March attack.

The Two Attacks Compared

Mary Claire remains in critical condition at Kenyatta National Hospital. She suffered life-threatening burns to her face, chest, and limbs after a corrosive chemical was splashed on her.

Police believe Opiyo, her former lover, orchestrated the premeditated attack by hiring a hitman.

Meanwhile, Steve Godia is still recovering from a similarly violent incident. Gladwel Kagai allegedly scalded Godia with hot water before fleeing the scene.

According to official reports, Kagai also stole two mobile phones and KSh 318,450, which was transferred to her own phone during the incident.

A Growing Search

Despite a formal report being filed at Kariobangi South Police Station, Kagai remains at large weeks later. To assist the police, Mosiria had taken the step of offering a financial incentive to the public.

“A reward of KSh 20,000 will be offered for verified information that leads to her arrest through lawful channels,” he announced in early March.

Mosiria maintains that for the public to have confidence in the legal system, justice must not only be done but must also be "seen to be done" for all victims.
