Pastor Ezekiel Kinusu, 37, moved mourners to tears on Monday as he recounted the moment he learned his mother, Alice Kadogo, had perished in the Malaha road accident.
The memorial service, held at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (Webuye Campus), honoured 16 victims of the deadly crash that occurred along the Webuye-Kitale road last week.
Clutching his mother’s portrait, Kinusu recalled spending a joyful day with her before tragedy struck in the evening. Following a minor motorbike accident in the Malaha area, his mother and several villagers rushed to the scene to assist.
“Later, the sad news came that a speeding lorry had rammed into people who had gathered at the scene of the initial accident,” Kinusu said. “When we rushed there, we were met with the devastating news that my mother and five other members of our extended family were among the victims. I have not recovered from the tragedy.”
Kinusu noted that his village, Mwinami, now feels cursed by the event. He called for the area to be renamed and urged authorities to install speed bumps and hold prayers to "exorcise the bad spirit" haunting the road.
The Monday evening accident also left numerous others with life-altering injuries.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who attended the service, expressed his pain over the survivors' plight. He revealed that three pregnant women were among those rushed to Webuye Subcounty Hospital; tragically, one lost her unborn child, while her husband later died from his injuries.
“We wish the patients admitted to hospitals a quick recovery and pray that God comforts the bereaved families as they come to terms with this tragedy,” Wetang’ula said.
The Speaker used the platform to demand a review of the Traffic Act, arguing that current laws are too lenient on reckless drivers. He confirmed he has engaged Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah to fast-track amendments to the law, aiming to introduce stricter penalties to curb the rising death toll on Kenyan roads.
“Every life lost on our roads is a painful reminder that we must act decisively to protect Kenyans and spare families the heartbreak of losing their loved ones,” he added.
The service was attended by Bungoma Senator David Wakoli and several MPs, including David Makali (Kanduyi), Didmus Barasa (Kimilili), Dan Wanyama (Webuye West), Martin Pepela (Webuye East), and Bungoma Woman Representative Catherine Wambilyanga.
