Three-year-old boy drowns in stream in Athi River, Machakos

A three-year-old boy was found dead after a drowning incident in a stream in Athi River, Machakos county.

Police and locals said the body drowned in Ngai Ndethia stream, which joins Mto Wa Mawe River, on Friday as he and others swam in the area.

The stream had swollen due to the rains being experienced and had heavy currents that prompted the drowning, police said.

The child was rescued and rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said the body was moved to the mortuary pending other procedures.

In Kamagambo area, Rongo, Migori county, a female miner died at a gold mining site, police said.

Police said Quinter Adhiambo, 38, and a mother of three had ventured into a tunnel in the area to dig out gold proceeds when the walls caved in and trapped her.

She was with other miners when the incident happened. The other miners managed to retrieve her body to the surface, where they confirmed she had died in the February 27 incident.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending other procedures, police said, adding it is the latest such incident to happen in the area and other mining sites.

There has been a campaign to ensure the general safety of miners at the sites in vain, officials say.

 Along Biashara Street, Nairobi, a man was found dead in a hotel room.

The man identified as Kigen Kiptonui had checked in to the hotel on the third floor, where his body was found hanging in a wardrobe with a coat tied around his neck.

The motive of the incident was not immediately known, police said as they moved the body to the mortuary for other procedures.

In Kitui town’s Kalundu area, a woman was found dead in her room with a stab wound on her head.

The woman was last seen on February 23, and it was after five days that the body, which was decomposing, was found.

The neighbours had complained of a bad smell from the house, which prompted them to check the source.

They said they found a faulty padlock on the door and opened it only to find the body lying on a mattress and blood which had caked around it.

The motive of the murder was not immediately established, and the body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.
