Intense rainfall that pounded Nairobi and its environs this week left sections of Mariakani Road in South B submerged, once again laying bare the area’s persistent drainage problems that continue to disrupt daily life for residents, pedestrians and motorists.

On Friday, a heavy downpour triggered flash floods in low-lying parts of the estate, overwhelming stormwater drains and causing sewers to overflow along the busy stretch.

In one moment captured during the downpour, a man is seen assisting two women across a flooded section of Mariakani Road using a mkokoteni, underscoring the challenges residents face whenever heavy rains hit the capital.

Another image shows a motorist wading through knee-deep water as vehicles struggled to move through the submerged roadway. Overflowing sewage compounded the situation, raising health and safety concerns for those navigating the area.

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) had earlier issued a heavy rainfall advisory for Nairobi, cautioning that sustained showers could trigger flash floods and strain drainage systems.

The city has experienced steady rainfall in recent days, and the department forecasts more showers, urging residents and commuters to remain vigilant.
