Champions Kenya Police FC dealt Gor Mahia a setback in the SportPesa Premier League title race after battling to a 1-1 draw at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

Brian Chonjo handed the law enforcers a 22nd-minute lead and Police looked set to claim all three points before Ebenezer Assifuah struck late to rescue a draw for K’Ogalo.

Despite the setback, Gor Mahia remain top of the table with 65 points, seven ahead of second-placed AFC Leopards, who have played one game fewer. Police sit third on 52 points.

Gor Mahia now require at least seven points from their remaining three matches to secure a record-extending 22nd league title.

Meanwhile, APS Bomet boosted their survival hopes with an impressive 2-0 away victory over Mathare United at the Kasarani Annex.

The result lifted APS Bomet to 37 points, while Mathare remained stuck on 35 after another frustrating afternoon marked by missed chances and defensive lapses.

Mathare started brightly and nearly grabbed an early lead in the 18th minute when Isaac Omweri’s powerful strike crashed against the upright after good work from John Mark Makwata.

But against the run of play, APS Bomet struck in the 27th minute through captain Philip Wasai, who punished hesitant defending to put the visitors ahead.

“We understood before kickoff that Mathare would come aggressively because they were also fighting for survival,” said Wasai.

“But the coach reminded us to stay calm, trust our structure and remain disciplined even when they dominated possession.”

Mathare pushed hard after the break, with Ian Omondi heading narrowly wide before coach James Kamau introduced Michael Oduor, Dennis Okoth and Asango in search of an equaliser.

“We actually started the game exactly the way we wanted because our intensity and movement were causing them problems,” Kamau said afterwards.

“When Omweri hit the post, I genuinely believed we were taking emotional control of the match.”

However, APS Bomet defended resolutely and sealed victory in the 75th minute when Festus Kipkemoi finished off a swift counterattack to complete another vital win in their survival push.

Coach Sammy “Pamzo” Omollo praised his players’ discipline and resilience.

“We survived difficult moments early in the game, but the players remained organised and trusted the tactical plan,” said Omollo.

“The clean sheets are giving the squad enormous confidence, but the job is still unfinished.”

Elsewhere, KCB FC and Bandari FC played out an entertaining 2-2 draw, with Francis Kahiro converting a late penalty to rescue a point for KCB.

Kariobangi Sharks defeated Nairobi United 2-0, while Murang’a SEAL edged Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0 in another tightly contested fixture.
