Garissa Senator Yussuf Haji has received a boost in his bid to become governor after professionals from the Samawathal clan formally endorsed his candidature.

The Samawathal Council of Elders, led by Sultan Hassan Omar Shurie said Haji is their sole candidate for the county top seat. The declaration means the clan has snubbed former Ijara MP Ibrahim Ahmed Abaas who also wanted the gubernatorial job.

Professionals from the clan told journalists in Garissa town that they will support the elders' position. 

Salah Aden, speaking on behalf of the professionals, said the declaration was made after careful deliberation and a commitment to long-term stability, fairness, and collective progress.

“The council’s decision reflects thoughtful leadership and a responsible approach to governance,” Salah said.

He said the elders had considered the perspectives of community leaders and stakeholders while safeguarding shared values.

Former Garissa Deputy Governor Abdullahi Hussein endorsed Senator Haji’s administrative experience, integrity, and competence.

Holugho MCA Adow Omar urged the community and professionals across the county to engage constructively to ensure positive outcomes.

Senator Haji expressed gratitude to the elders on social media, pledging to carry the “shared vision” to the people across Garissa county.

He is expected to face competition from former Governor Ali Korane of the Abduwaq clan and former Lagdera MP Mohamed Shidiye of the Awlihan clan, both of whom have already declared their intentions to run for the position.

Korane recently launched a series of constituency tours across Balambala, Garissa Township, and Fafi constituencies.

The Samawathal endorsement consolidates Senator Haji’s position within his clan.
