Crime scene
Detectives are investigating an incident in which a man is alleged to have poisoned his eight-year-old son in Mwariki, Nakuru County.
Police said a second child, aged two-and-a-half years, was admitted to hospital in serious condition after consuming the substance at their home on February 15, 2026.
The father of the children is being sought for questioning over the incident, police said on Monday.
According to police, the man allegedly used juice mixed with an unknown substance. The motive was not immediately known.
Police said the couple had travelled to another home in the area and left their two children with a house help to address marital differences.
The children’s mother told police that the husband returned home at dawn on Sunday and went to the master bedroom where the children were sleeping.
She said he later went to the kitchen, picked up a packet of juice, poured it into a glass containing a substance suspected to be poison, and returned to the bedroom.
Police said the man allegedly woke the children and gave them the juice before leaving the house.
The house help told police she later noticed the children vomiting and crying in pain and rushed them to the hospital.
The older child died while receiving treatment, while the younger sibling was admitted in serious condition.
Police were informed and visited the scene, where they collected the juice and other exhibits for analysis as part of the investigation.
Officers said they are looking for the man for questioning and that a murder investigation has been opened.
Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man was fatally stabbed during a fight over a mobile phone in Migosi, Kisumu County.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy. Police said the surviving child was responding well to treatment during a hospital visit.
Police said Raphael Omondi sustained a fatal stab wound to the chest during an altercation that reportedly began at a drinking joint in the area.
The suspect was rescued by police as he attempted to flee the scene after being cornered by a mob that wanted to lynch him during the Sunday incident.
The body of the deceased was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy, while police recovered the suspected murder weapon at the scene.
Police said the suspect will face murder charges.
