CNN correspondent Larry Madowo has revealed some unexpected reactions to his reporting on Kenyans caught up in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
In recent months, Madowo has highlighted the experiences of Kenyans who say they were misled into joining the Russian military.
Several returnees have claimed they were promised construction jobs, lucrative salaries, or even Russian citizenship, only to find themselves deployed to active combat zones.
Some survivors have said they were pressured into signing contracts written in Russian, documents they did not fully understand.
Through his reporting at CNN, Madowo has cautioned Africans against traveling to Russia based on promises of well-paying jobs that may not be what they seem.
However, the journalist says his coverage has led to an unexpected wave of direct messages. Instead of being discouraged, some Kenyans have reportedly asked him to connect them with opportunities to join the war.

According to Madowo, several individuals reached out expressing interest in enlisting. One person reportedly asked for assistance in securing a position in the Russian army, while others said they were willing to risk their lives if it meant earning an income.
In response, Madowo clarified that he is a journalist — not a recruiter for either side in the conflict — and urged people to stop sending such requests.

In a surprising twist, he later shared that one individual pivoted from seeking military connections to asking for introductions to wealthy older women abroad, suggesting it as an alternative way to improve his financial situation.
Madowo reacted with disbelief, questioning why such extreme options were being presented as the only paths forward.
Marriage Proposals and Online Speculation
The unusual messages do not stop there for the popular journalist.
In January last year, Madowo disclosed that he had received a marriage proposal via email from a 24-year-old Kenyan woman who directly asked him to marry her, promising further details later. Months after sending the message, she reportedly followed up to ask why he had not responded with a clear answer.
In another instance, a social media user publicly suggested that the journalist should get married, using language that caught him off guard.
Madowo responded humorously, wondering whether people had decided the year was about “forcing” relationships.
