During a recent interview about his travels across Africa, American livestreamer Darren Watkins Jr., widely known as IShowSpeed or simply Speed, spoke about the reception he received from fans across the continent.

The 20-year-old content creator, who has built a global following through high-energy livestreams centred on gaming, football and spontaneous public interactions, described the tour as a positive experience marked by close engagement with local communities.

He said the trip allowed him to experience different cultures firsthand while meeting supporters who had previously only interacted with him online.

“It’s hard because so much happened,” he explained during the interview. However, he singled out his time in Kenya as the most significant highlight of the tour.

Thousands Turn Out in Nairobi

According to Speed, the scale of the turnout in Nairobi left a strong impression on him. He recounted that thousands of fans gathered to see him stream in person, turning what was intended to be a public appearance into a large-scale event.

He estimated that about 30,000 people showed up to watch and participate in the live broadcast.

Videos circulating on social media at the time showed large crowds surrounding his vehicle and gathering in public spaces as he interacted with fans, filmed content and reacted in real time.

The scenes prompted widespread discussion online about the growing influence of international digital creators in African markets.

Surprised by His Global Reach

Reflecting on the experience, Speed said he had never witnessed such a large crowd assembled specifically for his content. He described feeling surprised by the level of support he encountered so far from the United States, where he is based.

“I’ve never seen that many people ever,” he said, adding that the moment was overwhelming.

The Rise of a Digital Star

Speed rose to prominence through YouTube and other streaming platforms, where his animated personality and football-related content — particularly his admiration for Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo — helped him build a substantial international audience.

His African tour formed part of a broader effort by digital creators to connect with global fan bases beyond traditional Western markets.

His visit to Kenya, in particular, highlighted the extent to which online personalities can mobilise large offline audiences.

The gathering demonstrated the crossover between digital popularity and physical public presence, as supporters turned out in large numbers to participate in what is typically an online experience.
